Vasco de Gama was the first European to explore Mozambique. He was the one who suggested to the Portuguese government to colonize modern-day Mozambique. He is, essentially, the reason as to why Mozambique is the way it is today. Vasco de Gama also saw future uses for modern-day Mozambique as a trading post. He saw how it was located very close to what is now known as the Cape of Good Hope, and realized that its location gave it a unique advantage. Ships coming to Asia around Africa could stop in Mozambique and re-fuel and re-stock. Ships coming through the Red Sea or returning to Europe could also stop in Mozambique and take rest and trade. Vasco de Gama sent explorers to get information of the terrain. He learnt of the mineral rich soil and mountains found in Mozambique and came to a conclusion. This had to be a colony of Portugal.
