Eduardo Mondlane was the leader of the group now known as FRELIMO or Frelimo. It was a revolutionary group in the late 1900's bent on liberating Mozambique from the clutches of Portugal, which it was still a colony of. But FRELIMO had a second motive. In parts of Africa, especially Mozambique, Marxism was gaining fast popularity. Socialist ideals really appealed to the people of Mozambique at the time. So when FRELIMO rose up against the Portuguese, they sought to enforce a socialist government system that would promote social equality in Mozambique. Naturally, once proclaimed openly Marxist, the revolution met a few more roadblocks. The biggest one was Uncle Sam. The United States wanted to interfere in the revolution and prevent it from succeeding. But this is where Eduardo Mandlane really shown through. He managed to rally his supporters in the face a large opposition and spur them onward. He convinced local farmers and peasants to join his cause and overthrew to the Portuguese government. He is still remembered in Mozambique as the liberator of the country.
