Armando Guebuza was the president of Mozambique elected after Chissano served two terms. Guebuza was a godsend for the Mozambican people. He was a revolutionary veteran and a FRELIMO activist. He instituted many infrastructural reforms to improve the internal commerce and trade of Mozambique. He is most famous for proposing the construction of the Unity Bridge, a bridge that would span the Ruvuma river and connect Mozambique with its neighbor Tanzania. However, during his reign, Mozambique suffered from two terrible floods that destroyed much of the southern half of the country. These floods killed thousands of people are forced many more to evacuate and move into the cities in the north. This lead to overpopulation within those cities. Also, many of Mozambique's farms were in the south, and they were flooded, leaving many hungry and on the streets. But Guebuza managed to pull the country out of what could have been a terrible recession. He focused all his attention on rebuilding the infrastructure and working up the economy and brought Mozambique back from the dead.
